Many developers say AI isn’t good enough to build with seriously. That judgment sounds level-headed. It’s increasingly based on an outdated frame of reference.

Coding agents make mistakes. That’s beyond dispute. But something structural has changed in recent months: the production layer of software has been extremely compressed. Tasks that used to take days or weeks are now — when properly scoped — completed in hours or minutes.

That difference is underestimated.

Coding agents maken fouten. Dat staat buiten kijf. Maar er is de afgelopen maanden iets structureels veranderd: de productielaag van software is extreem gecomprimeerd. Taken die vroeger dagen of weken kostten, worden nu — mits goed afgebakend — in uren of minuten uitgevoerd.

Veel organisaties maken momenteel dezelfde fout. Ze zien dat AI belangrijk is, besluiten dat “we er iets mee moeten”, en wijzen vervolgens één of twee mensen aan om het te verkennen. Juniors. Of een enthousiasteling. Of iemand die toevallig even minder declarabel is. Laat eerst maar eens iemand uitzoeken wat het kan, dan zien we verder.

Dat klinkt verstandig. Het is strategisch onverstandig.

De echte waarde van AI zit in beter zien wat er moet veranderen — welke stappen overbodig zijn geworden, wat er gebouwd moet worden, waar voorsprong ontstaat. Dat soort oordeel zit bij de mensen met de meeste ervaring, de meeste context en de meeste verantwoordelijkheid. AI-adoptie hoort daarom in het midden van de organisatie. Bij je beste mensen.

Many organizations are making the same mistake right now. They recognize that AI matters, decide “we should do something with it,” and then assign one or two people to explore it. Juniors. Or an enthusiast. Or someone who happens to be between projects. Let someone figure out what it can do first, then we’ll see.

That sounds reasonable. It is strategically unwise.

The real value of AI lies in seeing more clearly what needs to change — which steps have become redundant, what needs to be built, where competitive advantage emerges. That kind of judgment belongs to the people with the most experience, the most context, and the most responsibility. AI adoption therefore belongs in the center of the organization. With your best people.
